When learning Guitar or getting better on Guitar, it's your right strumming hand (or left if you play guitar left handed) that brings everything to life!
STRUM = DRUM = HUM
Think of your strumming like drumming...the beat, the rhythm that sets the groove.
When you are learning any song, tap out the beat to find the strum.
OR
'Hum your strum' - by humming the beat it can make it easier to hear the beat.
Sure, you need to know your 6 BASIC CHORDS, A B C D E F G ...that's right you only really need 6 chords to get playing guitar...then you need to be able to move between 2-3 chords quicker...
...but to to bring these chords to life we recommend focusing 50% of your playing / practice time on just your strumming.
IMPORTANT STRUMMING EXERCISE
One way to isolate your practice for your strumming hand is:
Mute the strings with your left hand - just rest flat fingers lightly on the strings (don't push down, it's just enough to make no sound).
Do a simple down-down-down-down strum to a clear 1-2-3-4 beat, with more accent (louder) on the 1st beat.
Get fancier by trying a variation on your strumming pattern - it can be anything - as long as you are playing to a clear 1-2-3-4 beat.
Left hand + Right hand = Together
By focusing just on your Right Strumming Hand you get a really concentrated practice in, which accelerates your learning.
The end result is to make it all more natural and with strumming...it's all feel!!!
So you need to practice it a lot more on your strumming - as 'feel' takes 3x times as long to master naturally.
Keep playing 3 minutes a day!!! Frequency is everything.
